- TEGA (Transforming Environmental Governance in the Anthropocene) is a transdisciplinary action research project aiming to contribute transformative change in global biodiversity governance, with a focus on Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) internationally and in South Africa and Namibia. Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation’s Pioneer program ‘Societal Transformations’, the project is implemented by a consortium including the Universities of Bonn, Namibia, Western Cape, and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research. TEGA follows a pluriversal approach that combines critical and decolonial perspectives with collaborative research practices to address systemic – including epistemic – shortcomings and dysfunctions of current ABS frameworks. While doing so, TEGA addresses fundamental issues of the exhausted mainstream paradigm of “sustainable development”. The action research is conducted by a Community of Purpose (CoP) which includes TEGA’s scientific team, development actors, policymakers, Indigenous and local community leaders, biotrade business actors, and representatives of scientific users of genetic resources. Activities include field research, three thematic Working Groups, as well as stakeholder workshops and various collaborative sub-projects with members of the CoP.
