Negotiating the Fabric of the African University: Global Trends and Local Realities A global model shapes our view of universities in the 21st century. African universities face challenges and must negotiate their character between pursuing excellence and difficult conditions. Two international conferences aim to deepen critical reflection on the African university as it negotiates its character between local realities and global trends. The conferences will interrogate the understanding of the university as a global cultural reference system and ask how African universities should respond to global standardization. The goal is to discover the defining features of African universities and address global trends, regional and local realities shaping them.
