Abstract: Today, India is home to a third of the world’s poor. This presentation will question the various ways in which social sciences can apprehend the extent of inequalities in this country. Starting from the various attempts by economists at measuring income and wealth inequalities, it will then look at the ways in which a more multidimensional approach to stratification is possible – and necessary. Beyond a unidimensional approach to economic inequalities, it is indeed necessary to understand how caste, class, religion, gender and other ascriptive characteristics intersect. Such an approach is necessary to understand how the functioning of the financial, labour and educational “markets” contributes to reproducing these inequalities.
