Abstract

In June 2016, the heads of ten Orthodox churches met on the island of Crete for the ‘Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church’. Preparations for the Synod date back to the 1920s, while scholars argued that it could be regarded as a successor to the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which took place over a millennium ago, in 787. This presentation will address the following questions: What are the geopolitical implications of the Orthodox Synod? How do Eastern Orthodox churches engage with political actors? Is there a unified voice within Eastern Orthodoxy in relation to religious and political tensions in Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East?
