The Digital Eye in the Sky - one of the most important aspects Laura Thompson presented. For instance, it helps to gain additional data about migration flows and secures fast help options after natural disasters.

On May 5, 2015, the FIW, in cooperation with the GIZ, the DW Akademie and the Liaison Office for Academic Sciences of the city of Bonn, hosted the second event of the lecture series "Die Welt im Wandel: Klima. Global. Digital". We were honoured to welcome our international guest Laura Thompson, Ambassador and Deputy Director General of the International Migration Organization (IOM), Genf.

The FIW received more than 130 guests who joined Laura Thompson's lecture "Climate Change and Digital Change: Impacts on Migration". Dr. Merjam Wakili (DW Akademie) greeted our guests and guided the lively discussion afterwards.

"Climate Change and Digital Change: Impacts on Migration"

After her general introductory speech, Laura Thompson's talk focused on the connection between climate change, digital change and migration. She linked the aspects of climate change and migration by presenting examples showing how migration flows changed due to the rise in temperature. Adding the aspect of technological progess and development, it soon became very clear that, for instance, the 'digital eye' (e.g. aerial pictures & data information) can be of crucial help in manifold situations, especially after natural disasters. Laura Thompson used current cases like the earthquake in Nepal to demonstrate how much the use of drones help to create a map of the aftermath in isolated locations without risking even more lives.
