Evelyn Moser studied political sciences and economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz including stays abroad at the State University of St. Petersburg and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). In her dissertation at the sociological department of the University of Lucerne, she focused, from a theoretical perspective of differentiation and world society, on political and economic transformation processes in rural Russia. Her research interests range from the sociology of political regimes, the theory construction and reflection in the area of post-Soviet transformation to the sociology of the market and the coupling and interaction of economic and political structures. In respect of democracy research, she lays the regional focus on the post-Soviet sphere and on Russia in particular.
