FIW-Permanent Visiting Fellow Dr. Anna Ahlers leads new research group "China in the Global System of Science" at the MPIWG

The Lise Meitner Research Group "China in the Global System of Science" has started its work at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG). The research group is headed by FIW-Permanent Fellow Dr. Anna L. Ahlers, who has already published extensively on the political system of the People's Republic of China (PR China) and was Professor of Modern Chinese Society and Politics at the University of Oslo until January 2020. Director of the FIW Department for Democracy Research, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Stichweh, is also a Visiting Scholar of the group.

The interdisciplinary research group will qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the unprecedented rise of the PR China in the global scientific system over the last two decades. The group of researchers will focus on governance and freedom of action in Chinese science and international cooperation and examine the interaction of social values and ethical principles with scientific standards and practices.
