In 1989, three young Muslim teenagers were expelled from the collège (junior high school) Gabriel-Havez in Creil, a suburb of Paris, for refusing to take off their headscarf in class. Since then the affaire du voile, or headscarf dispute, has been a divisive and controversial issue in French politics. This lecture offers an analysis of the affaire through the framework of deliberative democracy, the epistemic benefits of inclusion, and the problem of value diversity.

Hélène Landemore is Associate Professor of Political Science (Yale University)
